A group of determined parents have embarked on a fundraising quest to overhaul “tired” play equipment at a town centre park.

Disquiet has been growing about the state of the equipment at The Meadow in Cromer, with two slides recently removed for safety reasons and other items over 30 years old.

And, rather than let the situation drag on, the mums have set up the Meadow Park Revamp group, with the first fundraiser happening at The Wellington Hotel in the town on Friday evening.

Gemma Bailey, from Charles Close, is mum to Alfie, five, and three-year-old Molly. She grew up playing on The Meadow, and said she was “disappointed” at the quality and range of play equipment today.

She said: “I put comments on Facebook, saying something needed to be done about The Meadow. I got lots of comments from people. I asked who wanted to have a meeting, and it went from there.”

Gemma is chairman of the group, with Simone Hopwood as treasurer, Leanne Knight vice-chairman and Sharon Wigg secretary.

She said: “We want a wooden playset and an enclosed area so that parents can sit down without worrying while their children play.

“There’s a pirate ship at Wells, and we’d love to have something like that.”

She added that the group might be “looking at £50,000” to do it properly, but they were looking forward to kick-starting the efforts with the auction at the “Welly” at 7pm on Friday November 16.

Gemma said: “When I started playing at The Meadow I was about six or seven. But there’s nothing at all for the under fives. It’s the biggest park in Cromer and it’s in the centre of the town, so it needs to be better.

“It just looks a bit tired. When you see other villages, they often have excellent play areas with enclosed spaces. Cromer deserves the same.”

The group is also having a Santa’s grotto at the St John’s Hall, Bond Street, Cromer, on December 1.
