A new £1m recycling centre will open its doors to the public later this month.
The new site, on Telford Way, will be the fourth purpose-built site to have been opened by Norfolk County Council as part of a £4m, four-year investment in modernising and expanding the county’s network of recycling centres.
People will be able to use the centre from 9am on December 20.
The new Thetford site will replace the old one at Burrell Way which has become too small to deal with demand and will have enough space for four times as many cars, a one-way road system to keep the traffic flowing and dedicated service areas so that the site doesn’t need to close when the bins need changing.
It will be split-level, with some of the containers – for heavy and bulky recyclables – at a lower level so people can drop their items over the wall, eliminating the need to climb steps.
It will also feature a new Reuse Shop where people can donate and buy good quality household items, with sales being used to generate a funding scheme to support local communities.
Norfolk County councillor for Thetford east, Marion Chapman-Allen, said: “I’m delighted that Thetford’s new recycling centre will include a Reuse Shop. It will be the seventh in the network – and it will be the biggest. Norfolk’s other Reuse Shops have become really popular as great places to pick up bargains and if people are still on the look-out, perhaps they might even find some in time for Christmas.”
Norfolk county councillor for Thetford west, Mike Brindle, added: “With our town set for future growth, it will be a vital piece of infrastructure that will help make Thetford’s development sustainable for the years ahead.”
The current recycling centre will close permanently at 4pm on December 18. Opening hours for the new site from Thursday 20 December will remain the same. There will be no recycling centre service in Thetford on December 19 while equipment is moved to the new site.
