A community has won its fight to stop a near-40ft telecommunications tower being erected near a school and nursery.

Neighbours expressed concerns after Vodafone submitted plans for an 11.8-metre mast, with other equipment, opposite 140-142 Constitution Hill, north Norwich.

But Norwich City Council has refused to grant permission after ruling the mast was likely to add 'further clutter and obstruction' on the footpath, which could cause pedestrian safety issues at the start and end of the school day.

The authority added the height, design, positioning and lack of screening to hide the mast would create an 'unacceptable level of visual intrusion' for nearby houses and the street scene.

Vodafone had said it planned to work with highways officials to ensure the mast was not a visual obstruction for motorists.

A statement on behalf of the Sewell ward Labour city councillors said: 'We are very pleased with the outcome, mainly because of the way that the residents in the area have led this themselves. We were there to support them in any way we could.

'Many thanks to the many residents who took the time to send in and email comments to the Norwich City Council at this time.

'It just shows how powerful residents can be when they all work together.'
