Readers have reported bulbs emerging from the soil and there has even been a lone butterfly spotted on a Norfolk nature reserve.

With temperatures looking to stay around 10C for the forseeable future, odds are shortening by the day on the region staying snow free throughout January.

  • I had birds singing in my garden at 9pm last night. Not sure if it's the mild weather or the street lights confusing them but it was quite uncanny.

  • We indeed have bulbs shooting through and my lawn will have to be cut very soon. Weeds are growing like mad. If we get a sudden cold spell, as is being forecast for February, it will do a lot of damage. Not very good for the fruit trees as they haven`t had a period of frosting yet. The slugs and snails will abundant this year if this mild weather continues. But Mother Nature always has a way of evening up things.

  • I seeded a new lawn in early December and it's emerged already.

  • Certainly not spring , merely a continuation of the mild December weather, which we all know does not bode well ( a green Christmas brings a full churchyard). We have had a number of years when the daffs have been well up by Valentine's day and then covered with snow. But being only the 3rd of January we have plenty of time yet for a big old Scandinavian high pressure to give us something to think about. As for the lights, quite well documented now, the effect that excessive lighting is having on bird life, not all of it good. I have seen a harnser hunting along a ditch edge by street light near Yarmouth greyhound stadium
