Green fingered volunteers are being sought to help plant hundreds of trees in a popular park in Cobholm to boost its environmentally friendly surroundings.

People of all ages are being invited to place 420 saplings around a grassy area off Breydon Road as part of a cultivating scheme being led by the 3C youth club.

The club successfully applied to the Woodland Trust for a pack of fledgling trees and is now calling on residents to help plant the mix of hawthorn, rowan, hazel, downy birch, goat willow and common osier saplings.

Pupils from local schools are also being invited to take part in the A Tree For Me planting day, on Thursday, March 13 from 2pm-4pm. The saplings will be placed around the edge of the green area and continue the leafy border around from the existing willow trees, which were recently pruned back from the footpath.

3C youth leader Jade Brackley said: “Planting these trees is a great way to do something within the community, involving the community, to improve the environment and to encourage people to take more ownership in the area.

“We would like to see as many people as possible turn out to take part in A Tree for Me and plant their own tree.”

GYB Services will help on the day alongside environmental charity the Green Light Trust.

Helpers should wear wellies and sensible, all-weather clothes.

A limited number of spades will be provided, so people are encouraged to bring their own. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
