A bid to build a wind turbine on a farm in Barsham, near Beccles, has been refused on noise and visual impact grounds.
Waveney District Council’s development control committee has rejected Stamford Renewables’ bid to install a 125m tall wind turbine at Laurels Farm, having previously turned down an application for three there in October 2010.
The applications have caused controversy with residents’ group Halt formed to fight the proposals.
A spokesman for Halt said: “We are pleased and relieved at the decision made by the development control committee and because the decision was unanimous, with one abstention, it reinforces the strength of the case Waveney planning made.”
They added they expected an appeal to be made and are already fundraising to commission experts for a potential public inquiry.
Mike Stamford, CEO of Stamford Renewables, said that the impact of the decision would be felt by lower income families in Waveney, as he criticised the council for not supporting clean, green energy.
He said: “Every megawatt of wind power installed in Waveney means less megawatts of gas imported at volatile global market prices.
“Imported fossil fuel energy has been the principal driver behind bigger fuel bills but home-grown wind power puts downward pressure on energy bills because it means we import less gas at volatile prices.
“The concept is very simple.”
He added: “The UK has only two options for keeping the lights on past 2016 – imported gas and home-grown wind-power.
“While Waveney District Council continues to play King Canute with the oncoming tide of renewable energy, ordinary hard working people, struggling to get by, will be saddled with rising energy bills.”
Terrorism returned to the streets of London today as two suspected Muslim fanatics butchered a man in broad daylight in the name of “Allah”.

These things are a joke, they take more energy to build and service than what they save and the energy companies are the only people who make money out of them. The government hand outs need to stop and so do these blots on the landscape, even the tree huggers are starting to wake up. As for the comment about lower income familes well thats a joke, energy companies already charge for this rubbish on peoples energy bills which contributes to them going up it just proves what a load of sharks these people are and they are only out for themselves

Thanks DS. I too have no wish to hold back our future, and, indeed some of my work is in this sector. However, when you analyse the various ways of creating electricity, it doesn't take long to realise just how useless onshore wind is. So, not NIMBYISM, practical reality. If the billions now wasted on wind had been invested wisely in Fusion, we wouldn't be having either wind turbines or this conversation!!!

"Home-grown wind power", what an earth is that and how does it put downward pressure on energy bills? Turbines made abroad from wind from 'foreign parts' to generate the most expensive electricity available, that isn't 'despatchable' and can't be relied upon for 247 supply. With statements of this quality, it isn't difficult to see why the case was turned down.

Fantastic news! But some appalling hypocrisy from Mr Stamford:- "Mike Stamford, CEO of Stamford Renewables, said that the impact of the decision would be felt by lower income families in Waveney" Precisely how? His hugely unwanted turbine would be generating subsidies paid for all on their utility bills, poor or not. NOT having the turbine DECREASES the subsidies paid and therefore helps the poorer people. “The concept is very simple.” Extremely. The only reason for any wind turbine is for its owner to roll in the subsidy money from everyone else.

A good job WDC have the nerve to stand up to this sort of "green" blackmail. I would like to know the numbers from Mr. Stamford, but I imagine that this wonderful cheap source of power isn't quite so cheap when just the vast subsidies we and the State pay are factored in - let alone the price hikes which do not seem to distinguish between power from one source or another.
