One of TV’s most familiar faces is taking to the stage for a unique touring production coming to Great Yarmouth.

Barbara Marten, star of Waking the Dead, Whitechapel and Eastenders, is to head the cast of a play honouring the women behind Britain’s fishing heritage.

Get Up And Tie Your Fingers is set against the Eyemouth fishing disaster of 1881, in which 189 men died, and gives a fictional account of three women who watched it unfold.

The show will tour for three months, following the traditional route of herring fleets, stopping at 12 venues. At each performance the cast will be joined by a local community choir, who will perform a score based on the traditional songs the women sang.

The tour reaches Great Yarmouth’s Time and Tide Museum in July.

The production forms part of Follow the Herring – an arts project linking the shared heritage of east coast communities - and will be accompanied by a display featuring a replica fishing boat
