A campaigner for safer streets for pedestrians in Norfolk has been recognised for his 17 years of service by the national Living Streets group.

John Peacock, from Eaton, who is chairman of the Norfolk Living Streets group and Norwich Transport Action Group, said: 'I'm very proud to receive the 2014 Charles Maher Award. It's nice to know all your hard work has been appreciated over the years. I hope the award will help to strengthen our local group, which now has about 50 members, and inspire others to get involved in sustainable transport – which is the way forward.' The Charles Maher Award was created by Living Streets to commemorate long-standing member and campaigner Charles Maher, who left a significant legacy to the charity. Mr Peacock's skill in getting pedestrian issues in the public eye was highlighted in 2007 when a document he invented, based on Highway Code rules, was distributed on pavement parking cars in South Park Avenue, Norwich. It led to a dramatic reduction in pavement parking, and resulted in the road receiving double yellow lines.
