The annual influx of hedgehogs at a wildlife hospital has been matched by a spike in volunteer foster carers.

Prickly bundles are being cared for across the Great Yarmouth borough by hedgehog friendly folk making cosy dens in their homes and nursing their charges back to full health.

David Carr of Wild Touch animal rescue in Rollesby said he had been delighted by the response, helping to free up wards for animals that were in medical need with the community providing snug rehabilitation beds.

His home-based haven, which takes all sorts of wildlife as well as exotic pets for re-homing, is full to capacity with sick and underweight juvenile hedgehogs.

He said longer summers were part of the problem with an abundance of food and insects prompting the animals to have a second litter.

Being born late meant there was little time to fatten up to the required weight, putting the animals in peril.

Foster carers need to keep the animals warm and well fed, and help them to hibernate when the time comes.

Animals will then be released when their wild relatives begin to emerge, usually in the early Spring.

The animal centre currently has a waiting list of foster carers ready to help convalescents but still needs donations of old newspapers, towels, blankets and cat food.

Hedgehogs found wandering in the day will be in need of help, whereas those wandering at night even at this time of year should be left alone.

Meanwhile at Foxy Lodge in Hemsby they are taking more hedgehogs than ever, having counted at least 300 this season. With space for 40 at their rescue centre they do all their caring in house and are also desperate for towels, sheets, duvet covers and blankets.
