A controversial new bid has been made to build a wind turbine on a farm near Beccles.

Stamford Renewables has previously made applications to build turbines at Laurels Farm, in Barsham, but with an agreement still not reached with Waveney District Council concerning a cost claim from the last application, a new bid has been put forward.

The company wants to build one wind turbine, at a height of 125m, having previously bid for three and then two on the site.

The application has again caused controversy with more than 100 emails and letters sent to Waveney District Council, while Beccles Town Council, Kirby Cane and Ellingham, Geldeston and Mettingham parish councils have all recommended the bid be refused.

The choice of turbine has not been decided but it is claimed it would help to meet the annual electricity needs of 1,190 homes, which is 4pc of the Waveney district.

Complaints include that it will dominate the landscape and there are fears that more will be built if one is approved.

Mike Stamford, chief executive officer of Stamford Renewables, said he was answering every letter to “ensure that misconceptions are quickly corrected” and that the turbine was necessary to help “bridge the energy gap”.

He added three schools and Barsham and Shipmeadow Parish Council would all receive money from the application.

  • If Mr Stamford REALLY want to "bridge the energy gap", rather than simply steal for all of us through subsidies, he'd do much better with a GAS turbine than stupid and clearly deeply unwanted wind one!
