A bottled beer from a Fenland family brewery has been named as the best in East Anglia.
Elgood’s Brewery’s Warrior (5.5 per cent) saw off competition from other highly respected beers to be voted champion bottled beer of East Anglia by the prestigious Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA).
Their Golden Newt beer won a Silver Medal in the Golden Beers Category.
Elgood & Sons is a family-owned brewing company situated on the North Brink, Wisbech.
It is run by chairman Nigel Elgood with the help of his three daughters managing director Belinda Sutton, director Claire Simpson and company secretary Jenny Everell.
Mrs Sutton said: “It is fantastic news. We are absolutely delighted with the award.
“I know we have won awards in the past but you can never have too many and it is great to have good feedback like this about our products.
“To win a category is one thing but to be chosen as best overall beer is tremendous.
“This is an interesting time for the company with us experimenting with fruit flavoured beers, so to get this award is the perfect boost just when we need it.”
Elgood’s run 36 public houses in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
The North Brink brewery, which was established in 1795, was one of the first classic Georgian breweries to be built outside London.
It has been run by the Elgood family since 1878, with the fifth generation of the family now coming through to run the business.
The Society of Independent Brewers was formed in 1980 as the Small Independent Brewers’ Association to represent the interests of the emerging new wave of microbrewers.
Renamed in 1995, SIBA is now one of the most authoritative and respected bodies in the brewing industry.
