The crash, between the 11.34pm Great Yarmouth to Norwich train and a stationary East Midlands Train, happened at Norwich Railway Station at about 12.20am today and was described by the British Transport Police as a “low speed collision between two trains at the station”.

A spokesman said: “Both trains remained upright and on the track. Eight passengers sustained injuries which are described as minor.”

He added an “investigation has been launched and inquiries are ongoing” to establish the circumstances which led to the crash.

The site manager at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital said seven of the eight were discharged from A&E and one was admitted but has since been discharged as well.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will lead the investigation into the crash. A spokesman said: “The RAIB is in attendance and is carrying out a preliminary examination of the circumstances in order to determine the next actions to take.”

Greater Anglia confirmed that 31 passengeres, a driver and conductor were on the moving train when the crash occurred - but none on the train in the station. Trains were running as normal today.

Jonathan Denby, head of corporate affairs, said: “Greater Anglia confirms that last night the 23.34 Great Yarmouth to Norwich service struck an empty, stationary train on arrival at Norwich station. The train arriving at Norwich was travelling at very slow speed.

“There were 31 passengers on board. Eight passengers have sustained injuries which are being described as minor. Our first priority has been and remains the welfare of the passengers and train crew involved.

“An investigation into the incident led by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is underway and we are assisting them with their enquiries.”

As well as BTP other emergency services including Norfolk police and the ambulance service were called while fire crews from Carrow, Sprowston, Earlham, Acle, Loddon, Long Stratton, Aylsham Attleborough along with the control unit from Wymondham were also mobilised.

The crews provided casualty care assisting the ambulance crews and made the scene safe.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) said they were alerted to the incident at Clarence Road at 12.16am and sent five accident and emergency ambulance crews, one non-emergency ambulance and a tactical advisor.

He said: “A total of eight patients were taken to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, four of which were taken in on a stretcher and the other four were ‘walking wounded’. All the injuries sustained are believed to be minor. This incident wasn’t a major incident for EEAST.”

Anyone with information should call BTP on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  • I now have to justify my claim. Is a 5p plaster cheaper in Tescos or Morrissons at Pakefied?. Or do I need to buy a larger pack just in case more than one person has a scratch at Asballio? I will take a gamble and go for the 20p insurance..ok go by car, it is safer.

  • A full emergency was in acted, I got a plaster out of my car.. I tripped whilst rushing to the scene, so asmallio now owe me £1000 plus costs for a telco plaster. Waterproof one is 5p extra... Ok call it £50k compensation. If there was not available a plaster in Ipswich then I now get £50k or more from council for them to counter sue because they don't work Saturdays or any other day it is proven ... OMG I hope the school kids are allowed to take over SCC all the time! After all , it is their future and not mentally ego impaired idiots that we have now because they have no hobbies or real friends, QeD SCC, wDC asleep ...
