Youngsters at Howard Junior School in Parkway, King's Lynn will be hoping for snow and ice in the next few months, so they can catch a glimpse of their newly named gritter truck on the roads.

The school was one of eight winners across the county in a competition set up by Norfolk County Council to name a gritter truck.

Eight-year-old Callum Taylor, who is in class 3H at the school, came up with the name 'Winter Warrior' for the truck.

And that name has been printed along with the name of the school on the new gritter which will work on their local route.

Callum, from The Fairstead, said: 'It's winter and I picked warrior because it's strong.'

The school's headteacher, Gregory Hill said the children were thrilled their name had been chosen.

He said: 'The children will be looking out for it in the area, as they feel it's their truck.

'The council engaged young learners in a very innovative way. The children had to answer a comprehension test asking them where their nearest gritter bin was, what the effect of salt on ice was, what clothes to wear in winter and they had to find gritting routes on the internet and on the IPads the school has given them.'

Callum's teacher Tina Wright added: 'The children are over the moon to get the gritter truck.'

Norfolk County Council's area manager for highways maintenance, Karl Rands said: 'I think it's been a really good event and it's good to see the children involved.'

The competition celebrates the £1.9m investment of 24 new gritter trucks to the county.

Schoolchildren aged 5-11 were asked to come up with names for eight gritters which they'll be able to spot out and about in their area this winter. Children also completed a short quiz online about gritting and staying safe during the colder months.

The council received 60 entries to the competition. The other winning entries were:
