A bizarre and highly entertaining nuns' race provided a spectacular conclusion to a three-day celebration of a school's centenary.

Some 600 people including current and former pupils, teachers, parents and staff enjoyed activities from Friday to yesterday to toast Swaffham's Sacred Heart School's landmark anniversary.

Also present were 20 sisters who belong to the congregation of the Daughters of the Divine Charity, which helped to establish the school.

The sisters travelled from as far as America, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bosnia, Croatia and the Czech Republic to take part in the centenary celebrations.

Activities enjoyed over the three days included crafts from bygone times, football, tennis and rounders games, drama looking at the First World War and the school's history, a look at fashion through the ages, a black tie dinner and dance and an old time musical with Swaffham Players.

The sisters and others in attendance took part in yesterday's nuns' race and the celebrations were concluded with prayers in the chapel.

The school's long-serving head, sister Francis Ridler, said: 'I am really proud of the way all of the staff and the pupils have taken part in everything and how everyone was so keen to get involved in the organisation of it all.

'With the Swaffham Players coming in we have opened the celebrations up to the wider community as well.

'Getting to 100 years is some achievement and I am really happy to see that it has been celebrated in such a special way.'

A new book on the school's history has been completed and a book of students' faith stories has also been produced.
