A creative Norwich schoolgirl is to see her design to encourage people to think green printed on thousands of bookmarks.

Chloe Cooper, 11, beat more than 100 entries in a competition run by Norfolk County Council to come up with a design to inspire people to recycle.

The design which the West Earlham Junior School pupil produced will be printed on 2,500 bookmarks – to be distributed throughout libraries and recycling centres across Norfolk.

Catrin Parry-Jones, Chloe’s head teacher at the Scarnell Road school in Earlham, said: “Chloe produced her design when we ran the competition during a lunchtime session.

“It was a great way of inspiring the children and getting them to think about all the different ways we can recycle more of our rubbish.

“We are really proud of Chloe for winning this competition and can’t wait to see the bookmark being used.”

The contest was run among key stage one and two pupils in the county’s schools.

Rose Waterman, waste reduction officer at Norfolk County Council, said: “Our competition asked children to think about how they would promote the ‘three Rs’ (reduce, reuse and recycle) and our Reuse Shops.

“They were allowed to include pictures of one of our shops, drawings of some of the items that could be bought or donated – or anything relating to the ‘three Rs’.

“We received loads of entries and it was difficult to choose a winner, but Chloe’s captured what we were asking for in a very simple yet effective way.”

The two runners-up were Sharmin Aktar Manik, nine, of Magdalen Gates Primary School in the north of Norwich and Sophie Mixon, seven, of Sutton Infant School, near Stalham.
