The Sign2sing event was held at the Warren School in Lowestoft today in aid of deaf health charity Signhealth, with a celebration assembly attended by pupils and special guests.

The school, which supports pupils with learning difficulties, has taken part in the event for several years, raising awareness and funds for the charity which supports services to improve the health and wellbeing of the deaf community.

Pupils have spent the last few weeks taking part in various activities linked to sign language and the event, with the whole school coming together to practise this year's song 'Friends Forever'.

The week culminated in a performance in the school hall, led by teaching assistant Liz Bloice.

Pupils were also joined by members of the Lowestoft Signing Choir, the Warren School parent/carer signing group and staff and pupils from the hearing impaired unit at Elm Tree Primary Academy in Lowestoft.

School headteacher Janet Bird said: 'We've been taking part in the event for several years now and we like to do something different each year. Last year we linked up with other schools through Skype and this year we invited in the choir, parents, carers and Elm Tree to perform with us.

'The idea is to raise awareness of communication and the different ways you can communicate with people with a hearing impairment.

'You can see from the looking around the room that they loved it and it was a really lovely way to end this half term.'

It is the eighth year running that SignHealth has run the Sign2sing event, encouraging schools, businesses, universities, clubs and choirs to learn a song in sign language and perform throughout the week from February 5 to 11.

Sign2sing helps fund projects that improve the lives of vulnerable deaf children and adults by helping them access help and advice on the things that matter to them in sign language.

Ms Bird said: 'We practiced the song for several weeks and a lot of our children are part of our sign language club so they get together once a week at lunch to practice.'
