Young footballers from Cawston primary school made it through to the semi-finals of a national competition.

The under-11s team headed to Aston Villa's training ground to take on other regional winners after an unbeaten run in the qualifying rounds.

They carried on their good form topping their group which also featured champions from Berkshire, Cheshire and Warwickshire.

In the knockout semi-final they were drawing 1-1 with Shropshire after two eight-minute halves in pouring rain.

But PE teacher Matthew Wigg said: 'Unfortunately our passing style of play was not working on the waterlogged pitch and we outdone by a long ball over the top of our defence.'

He added: 'The children were all disappointed but took defeat gracefully. We hold onto the fact that we made it to be in the top four small schools football teams in the country.'

Before the game pupils gave the team a VIP send-off including singing the school song, with its inspirational message 'give it all you've got.'

Head teacher Kay Swann said the school was very proud of the team.
