James Wong, who has appeared on Countryfile and Gardener’s Question Time on Radio 4, will visit the Easton campus of Easton and Otley College on January 21.

The best-selling author and double Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winner is on a national tour aimed at getting young people interested in studying or careers in horticulture.

Mr Wong said: “A career in horticulture is often completely unfairly dismissed as being unacademic, mundane and poorly paid. But that is simply not true!

“In reality horticulture can be one of the most dynamic, creative and rewarding industries out there –

with immense professional opportunities to earn a fantastic living.

“I’m living proof that any aspiring plant geek can get ahead and turn their passion into a full-time profession. And, after all, in how many industries do you get to pursue your biggest interest every day and get paid well for it?”

Mr Wong will be talking about the range of opportunities that are possible when studying horticulture while also giving personal tips and tricks on how to get ahead.

The talks are open to all, including schools, careers teachers and the public, and there will be a chance to ask questions at the end of the session.

Martyn Davey, head of landbased services at the college, said: “We have taught this subject at both our campuses, based in Norfolk and Suffolk, for decades and it’s great that an established broadcaster has chosen to come and see us to promote an industry that we are incredibly passionate about.”

Attendance is free – book your place by emailing easton.marketing@eastonotley.ac.uk or calling 01603 731211.
