Results in Thetford area schools held up well despite a turbulent year of change.
Thetford Academy’s principal, Cathy Spillane, praised her cohort of students after 42 per cent achieved an A*-C while the school was gearing up for a move to a single site.
“We are really proud of them because this has been such a difficult year for the academy and the sixth formers have just got on with it regardless throughout everything.
“They have conducted themselves with enormous grace under tough circumstances and have achieved well,” she said.
Her praise came despite the school’s A* to C pass rate dropping from 56 per cent last year. She said that decline was offset by a large increase in the number of pupils taking A-levels - from 17 last year to 65 this year.
Students at the Iceni Academy in Methwold also stood up well to a tough year which has seen the school transform from the former Hockwold and Methwold Community School and headteacher, Denise Walker, depart.
Their results saw A* to C passes drop just two per cent, from 53 to 51.
Alison Tilbrook, teacher, said: “We are really pleased with our A2 results - the majority of our students have gained their first choice university place, which include some of the top universities in the country including Warwick, UEA and Nottingham.”
Mildenhall Academy saws its results slip after also becoming an academy two months ago.
It saw 48 per cent of students achieving an A* to C pass mark, down from 62 per cent last year.
However, 97 per cent of students managed an A* to E pass.
Susan Byles, principal, said: “This is a great set of results and the students must be congratulated on how hard they have worked.
“Our priority is to make sure that everyone gets a university place, apprenticeship or job offer.”
Thetford Grammar School maintained its strong performance, with 87 per cent of students achieving an A* to C grade, and 100 per cent making A* to E.
Gareth Price, headmaster, said: “Even though there has been much talk about top grades being harder to achieve, Thetford Grammar School continued its consistent record of strong results.
“I am very proud of the group’s achievements, especially given the constant pressure that young people are under these days.”
