Could this video BE any funnier? Staff at Downham Market Academy took part in a Friends-inspired leavers’ video complete with the couch gags and smelly cats.

They lip-synced to The Rembrandts’ I’ll Be There For You and re-enacted scenes from the popular TV show as a parting gift to year 11 students.

Former student Sam Lance, 20, from Downham Market, teamed up with media teacher, Ian Gooda, to create the video which has been viewed 4,000 times since it launched on June 30.

Mr Lance said the video was designed as part of a trilogy to showcase music through the decades - with their first video in 2015 centred around 70’s hit Don’t Stop Me Now and the 2016 video on 80’s single Holding Out For a Hero.

Both videos went viral online and have stacked up almost 40,000 views on YouTube.

“These videos are passion projects for me.” Mr Lance said.

“I’m a photographer and videographer professionally, but these videos are fun little productions that I create for my old school.

“They’re surprisingly creatively and technically challenging too.”

It took four weeks to create and edit the video, with the film crew and staff filming in secret to avoid giving away this year’s theme.

The launch of the annual leavers’ video has become the pivot of prom night, with viewers praising the video as the “best one yet.”

Mr Lance added: “The reaction was certainly the best we’ve had.

“I always get light-headed at my own premieres, it’s an exciting time, but I certainly recall the students’ surprise to the fact that we had pulled this off for a third year running. Overall, it was really positive.”

Currently studying media production at the University of Lincoln, Mr Lance hopes to pass on the video tradition to the school’s current sixth form students, some of whom helped in creating the video.

He said: “I never expected Don’t Stop Me Now to do as well as it did. Ever since then Mr Gooda and I have tried to match its success.

“I’d still love the videos even if they were only seen by a handful of students, but the fact that the wider community also enjoy them is absolutely lovely.

“My ambitions are very much in video and photography, but I ideally want to pair them with music as much as possible.”
