Cakes were baked, legs were waxed and heads were shaved during a series of fundraising events.

Students and staff at Ormiston Denes Academy in Lowestoft also embarked on a sponsored walk, sang on karaoke and held a non-uniform day during a “remarkable” charity week.

The Lowestoft academy in Yarmouth Road raised £3,017.52 for Cancer Research UK during the week-long programme of events.

The week kicked off with two bake sales, supported by Lorilops of Lowestoft who donated delicious cup cakes, complementing those brought in by students and staff.

The following day a well attended lunchtime karaoke session was held as further funds were raised on the door.

A total of 34 students and staff also took part in a sponsored walk from Southwold to Lowestoft. Grebe Coaches sponsored the event by subsidising the cost of coach travel to Southwold, and students were very grateful for the generosity shown by the Co-Operative store in Pakefield who supplied ice lollies to everyone as they neared the end of their 16-mile walk.

While this was going on, other students and staff chose to take part in sponsored exercise during their PE lessons throughout the day.

After students had previously voted for the member of staff they would most like to see have their legs waxed, four male members of teaching staff bravely put their names forward. With voting by donation, the ‘winner’ was the member of staff whose donations amounted to the most. After some visible relief from the runners up – Mr Buisst, Mr Cooper and Mr Brown – it was Christopher Pinner, who had his legs waxed by consultants from Lowestoft-based salon Millie Rose Hair and Beauty.

A non-uniform day saw students and staff wear an item of pink or blue, before the week’s events ended with a staff shave-off. Three members of staff had their heads shaved, while the vice principal, Tony Bown, succumbed to having his beard shaved off.

Two students also bravely volunteered to have their long locks removed. Head Girl Lauren Benjamin had her long hair cut off, as did fellow student Trinity Jane Hook – with their hair being donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free of charge to young children suffering with hair loss.

The Lowestoft-based fundraising group supported the events on the last two days of the week, bringing along their three-wheeler modified vehicle, to help promote awareness.

On the final day a pledge cheque was presented to Gary Bennett, representing Lauren Lou

Suzanne Chapman, volunteer marketing manager for Lauren Lou, said: “We were thrilled to be a part of this amazing event at Ormiston Denes Academy. Over £3000 raised – incredible! We wish to thank everyone involved at Ormiston Denes Academy for their help.”

Oliver Cooper, organiser and Student Leadership lead, said: “During the entire week all students were supportive of the event. I am extremely proud of all who contributed to a fantastic week. We would like to thank the organisations who supported our charity week. Also, a huge thank you to parents, carers, staff and students for their support during the year.”

Students and staff also supported other charities – such as Children in Need, Macmillan Cancer Support and Red Nose Day – throughout the year with about £2,000 raised.
