Schoolchildren and teachers took part in their own Olympic relay today - using a handmade torch.

Pupils from five schools in the Harleston area got involved in an almost 19 mile relay run starting and finishing at Pulham Market on the day the official Olympic torch entered Norfolk.

Students from primary schools at Pulham, Alburgh and Denton, Harleston, Brockdish and Archbishop Sancroft High School in Harleston got involved in the event as part of their cluster partnership.

Four adults ran the full 18.9 mile route to all five schools - ex-Olympian Paul Evans, of Active Norfolk, Rob Connelly, assistant headteacher at Archbishop Sancroft High School, Lee Richardson, deputy head at Harleston Primary School, and Tom Anstiss, teacher at Harleston Primary School.

Almost 150 children from the schools ran parts of the journey to celebrate the Olympic torch relay, which does not pass through south Norfolk. They ran with a 'Friendship Flame' - Norfolk's own version of the Olympic Flame - donated by Active Norfolk.

Mr Connelly ran to raise funds for his school's charity of the year - To Kenya With Love.

An opening ceremony at Pulham featured a guest appearance from Oliver Jones, who won gold in the 1988 Paralympics in the 100m freestyle swimming.

Kate Nichols, of Archbishop Sancroft High, said: 'It is a fun thing to do to get the kids together and celebrate the Olympics and it is nice to do something on the day the torch comes to Norfolk.'
