Road safety improvements will benefit hundreds of South Molton students
PUPIL power has helped pave the way for a brand new pedestrian crossing in South Molton.
Student representatives at South Molton Community College met with Devon County Council highways officers to make a strong case for a zebra crossing at the junction of South Street and Old Alswear Road.
And their efforts have been rewarded this week with news that the council has approved a £33,000 scheme to provide them with a safe crossing point.
A council spokesperson said the need for a new crossing at South Street had been raised by students through the School Travel Plan process.
“Around 40 per cent of the 600 pupils at the college live within the town and the road represents a significant barrier for these pupils getting to and from school.”
As well as improving road safety, it is hoped the new crossing will encourage more pupils in the town to walk to school.
Work on the new crossing could start in the autumn, possibly to coincide with the half-term break.
