Archant

When six-year-old Edward Donaldson came home from school with a torn library book, he asked his mum to help buy some new books for his fellow pupils.

However, after she suggested he come up with a fundraising idea of his own, the enterprising youngster set to work.

Edward, who is a Year 1 pupil at St Mary’s Community Primary School, Beetley, organised two bake sales and asked family and friends to sponsor him to read as many books as possible in an hour, and, last week, he handed over more than £200 worth of new books during morning assembly.

Headteacher Jessica Balado said St Mary’s had invested heavily in its library over the past year and the extra books would benefit the whole school.

She added: “We are very grateful and proud of Edward for the amazing contribution he has made to our library; it is wonderful to know that our children are willing to go to such lengths to raise money for us.”
