The Dean of Norwich, the Very Rev Graham Smith, opened the remodelled and extended reception classroom at the Thomas Bullock Primary School in Shipdham, near Dereham, on Friday.

A former storage unit has been refurbished and a covered outdoor area has been developed - both projects cost £75,000 combined.

Headteacher Paul Madsen said: “We were quite gobsmacked when it was completed. All of us were taken aback by how good it looked. We are proud of our school anyway but we are proud of this. It is the icing on the cake. All the other teachers are envious of the reception teacher.”

He added the work was completed in the summer holiday after the number of reception pupils increased from about 22 to 28 for the new school year.

Father Graham said: “It is going to transform early years work here. The children are extraordinarily lucky and privileged. When the balloons went off it was a great moment. The Thomas Bullock Primary School will be the envy of many other schools.”

The work was funded by the Diocese of Norwich, the school and the Thomas Bullock Trust, which raises money for community groups in Shipdham.
