Athletes from years 4 to 9 headed to the Sportspark at the University of East Anglia for the swimming races and Playground to Podium Festival, which aims to spot any future sporting stars.

Over 200 young people rotated between volleyball, cricket, goalball and tennis, while 384 talented swimmers dived into the competition in the pool.

Rob Richardson, captain of the GB Men’s Sitting Volleyball team and paralympic athlete, was there to lend a hand.

He said: “I have been asked to make sure the kids all enjoy it, but also to see if any boys or girls who enjoy it are also very good.

“At national and regional level we are trying to recruit young people. The fact that disability sports and able-bodied sport together is great. It doesn’t really need be different when you are younger; you just want to play sport.”

Zak Worby, 12, from Neatherd High School, in Dereham, who competed for West Norfolk and Dereham School Sports Partnership, said he had “really enjoyed” the day.

He added: “We played table tennis and we learnt how to do the stance and grip.”

However, the youngster said his favourite sport is fishing. He might only be 12, but Zak is already part of an adult team and has trials for England next year.

His fellow pupil, Stephanie Warmer, 11, said: “It’s fun to come out of school and do this. At home I like lounging around and watching TV, although I do quite like cricket and golf.”

Ben Jones, director of Active Norfolk, said: “This promises to be a great week of sport where hundreds of young people take part each day, a real demonstration of the activities happening in schools year-round.”

Come back tomorrow for reports and pictures from day 4 of the event.
