Glorious sunshine welcomed dozens of families as they joined in creative games inspired by cultures around the world.
The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts’ annual free family fun day returned today (Sunday) with the theme of World Art Game Day.
Inspired by art in the gallery’s collections and different cultures, the event saw youngsters and their mums and dads join in a reconstruction of an ancient Mesoamerican ball game - never before attempted in the UK - whereby a ball is hit from the hips and the goal is a hoop set in the steep sides of the court.
There was also a giant cat’s cradle from North America, jump-rope games from China and races including the classic egg and spoon challenge.
Other activities included hat and badge making, face painting, live music and gallery trails.
Meanwhile, those who were after a more relaxing afternoon could join in chair yoga sessions or accompany artist Kaitlin Ferguson in walking the ancient Nazca Lines of Peru, mapped onto the floor.
Kerry Leathley, from the gallery, said: “It’s been a lovely day with lovely weather and we’ve had a really good turn out.
“People have been joining in all the fun, playing lots of games and dressing up in costumes.”
Ahead of the event, youngsters had helped make some special games for the day, including 12 pupils from West Earlham Junior School.
They had designed a game with three giant heads filled with spaghetti, beans, and flour. People had 30 seconds to put their hands in the heads and find eyeballs hidden there.
Children from the Earlham Early Years Centre also designed games for the event.
World Art Game Day was granted the London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.
