Duke of Gloucester officially opens Thetford Academy's new building

Students from Thetford Academy were visited by the Duke of Gloucester today as he officially opened the school’s £18 million building.

Joined by Richard Jewson, Lord-Lieutenant for Norfolk, and Lady Dannatt, the High Sheriff of Norfolk, the Duke unveiled a plaque marking the school’s opening and was given a tour.

There he met students in maths and design and technology classes, and was even presented with a spanner made for him by students.

Dame Rachel de Souza, CEO of the Inspiration Trust, which runs the academy, said the visit had been a “great day” for the town.

“He was really impressed by the children. He told us that as he gets older he worries more about education, and was so pleased to see the great education Thetford students are now getting,” she said.

An architecture devotee, Dame de Souza said the Duke was “fascinated” by the new building.

Students have been using the site since September, having been based on two campuses across the town while it was built. Joined by Richard
