Meet five-year-old Eddie Wedge – a little boy with a vast imagination who everyday turns household junk into a brilliant new toy to play with.

Monster feet, a helicopter, a space rocket and even everyday items like food mixers are just some of the many ingenious and interactive creations that have been made by the young Norwich toy-maker.

Now his mum Nancy Wedge, 38, has started a blog to share Eddie’s ideas so that other children can have fun making them too.

“I would like to be a toy-maker when I grow up or a policeman,” said Eddie, who goes to Taverham Hall School.

“I like making toys so I can have more toys to play with. I like taking them into school and playing with my friends.”

Eddie was born with an underdeveloped cerebellum, the part of the brain which controls coordination, and Mrs Wedge said the toy-making had helped him overcome some of the challenges he faces, including speech. She said Eddie first made a toy to take to school with him in September and his classmates were so interested he decided to make a new toy every day.

“To begin with it really helped him engage with other children when he wasn’t so confident,” she said, adding that Eddie usually gets ideas for his toys from what he learns at school as well as books and television shows.

“He usually goes to bed thinking about what he is going to make and then makes his new toy when he gets home from school the next day,” she said.

Eddie’s whole family, including his dad Bill, 40, and brother Oscar, three, all get involved in Eddie’s toy-making at their home in The Avenues.

Mrs Wedge said: “Oscar quite likes playing with the results and sometimes asks to have a toy made for him. The superhero cuffs were made for Oscar because he likes superheroes.”

When Mrs Wedge wrote about Eddie’s toy-making on Facebook she got so many positive comments that she decided to set up a Create Your Own Toys blog. To see the blog visit https://createyourowntoys.wordpress.com/
