Students in Norwich are celebrating today as they collect their A-level results.

Many will now be frantically checking to see if their university places have been confirmed and if all their hard work has paid off.

In Norwich, headteachers and principals have been revealing their school's achievements, with many posting improvements once again on previous year's results.

Nationally, about 335,000 students will be receiving their A-level results today.

But despite an overall drop in the number of pupils applying for university this year, thought to be partly due to increased tuition fee, teenagers are still likely to face a scramble for places.

Initial figures from Ucas show almost a 7pc drop in the number of students who have already had their places confirmed.

Universities now face caps on the number of students they can admit but are able to take on an unlimited number of learners who have gained at least AAB in their exams.

It means students gaining those higher grades will find themselves with even more options but those with lower grades who fail to meet a university's offer could find it difficult to secure a place through clearing.

Today, their success is what matters. As a school we maintain a more open-access sixth form. It is exciting to see students at the highest academic ability achieve success. It is also important to celebrate so many who achieve good mid range grades having performed significantly above their individual subject targets. Our congratulations to them all.'
