Designated ‘Quiet Lanes’ in rural north Norfolk turned a little lively last night as North Walsham High School students made their way to their leavers’ prom.
A London double-decker bus, articulated lorry cabs, second world war American and German jeeps, stretch limousines, decorated VW camper vans and deep-throated Harley-Davidson bikes were among the novel forms of transport which dropped off 135 students in their finery.
The Class of 2013 chose the Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel, buried deep in wooded countryside near Cromer, for their prom venue and its restaurant was decorated in the school’s burgundy and gold colours for the celebration.
Among noisier arrivals were Hannah Wait and Dean Smith who rolled up in a balloon-topped motorised go-kart, claxon blaring. The buggy belongs to the Wait family and had been used around the garden by Hannah ever since she was old enough to reach the pedals, according to her father, Alister.
And Christmas carols blasted the summer evening air as Callum Tartt and Dan Cresswell came ski-ing in aboard Santa’s Sleigh. Callum’s dad Gary is a member of North Walsham Round Table which uses the sleigh for its charity work.
Angela Hogg, cover supervisor at the school, helped the student prom committee plan for the big day.
She said they had been fund-raising through the year and had arranged for a chocolate fountain, karaoke, limbo dancing and music as part of the celebrations which also included a hot buffet and gold-decorated cupcakes in burgundy cases, made by staff member Carol Wall.
A large screen showed photos of the students dating back to their arrival at the school in year seven and outside a Class of 2013 banner, designed by student Phoenix Cushing, welcomed prom-goers.
