Hundreds of youngsters sprinted, threw, jumped and bounced their way to glory as they took part in an afternoon of indoor activities.

Pupils from 10 different schools competed in sportshall athletics at the University of East Anglia today as part of the Norfolk School Games.

Organised by the Norwich School Sport Partnership, the event saw more than 250 schoolchildren compete in 15 different sports including relays, javelin, speed bounce and standing long jump.

The winning school, St Thomas More Junior School, will go on to represent the Norwich SSP at the Norfolk Winter School Games in March.

Jon Osborne, Norwich SSP's development manager, said: 'It's been brilliant. The kids have been really supporting their classmates and cheering each other on.

'It's been really exciting and exactly how it should be.'

The schools which took part in the competition were Cringleford Primary, Avenue Junior, Norwich High School for Girls, West Earlham Junior, St Thomas More Junior, Wensum Junior, Notre Dame Prep, Larkman Primary, Little Melton Primary and Colman Junior.

The children were aged nine, 10 or 11.

Fifteen pupils from City of Norwich School acted as young leaders, helping to run the events.

Mr Osborne said: 'Everyone has taken part in two or three events and have been given the chance to try different things and get a taste for different athletic disciplines. It's been brilliant.'

The 2012 Norfolk School Games has been regarded as one of the most spectacular school sport events to have taken place in Norfolk with 15,000 children taking part. The finals in June, which were opened by Olympic javelin thrower Steve Backley, saw 2,000 youngsters compete.

Organisers of the 2013 Norfolk School Games have promised it will be even bigger with separate winter and summer weeks of competition. There will be 36 sports with the additions of skiing, swimming and angling plus competition for small schools and special schools.
