A north Norfolk school selected from 20,000 others has been promoting the values of the Olympics and Paralympics with a range of activities.

Gresham’s Prep School in Holt was selected as the “Get Set network school of the month” for June and before the end of term the school celebrated today’s (Wednesday) torch relay by hosting its own games complete with an opening ceremony.

The games commenced with the brass group playing Fanfare for the Common Man and was followed by a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and then the Mascot dance performed by year eight pupils.

The group staged a routine and London 2012 mascot Wenlock appeared and joined in the dance. Wenlock spent the afternoon with the children watching their sporting activities and taking part too.

Edward Hudson, a former Olympian fencer for Great Britain, formally opened the school’s games and each country went round a carousel of events which included egg throwing, frisbee discus, ping pong, shot putt, pea shooter archery, blindfold shoot out and a three legged races.

Presentation of certificates and medals went to the winning junior and senior teams and were won by USA and Holland, respectively.

A spokesman from the school said: “It was an exciting afternoon of alternative Olympic sports which the staff and pupils will remember for some time to come.”

Organisers of the Get Set Committee have been following the school’s blog on their website and have identified a number of ways in which the school has been promoting the values of games.

This means that the school will be showcased and receive a congratulatory letter from London 2012 chairman Lord Sebastian Coe.
