With the Olympics just two weeks away, children at an Old Catton primary school have been given the chance to create their own flags to mark the games.

Pupils at White Woman Lane Junior School enjoyed being creative with colours, fabrics and designs to give the Union Flag a miniature makeover.

With the help of the artistic visual merchandising team from John Lewis in Norwich, the 280 pupils had their pick of arts and crafts provided by the store to make their flag as patriotic as possible.

Year five pupil Joe Overton, 10, from Old Catton, is looking forward to the football at the games. He said: “I didn’t want to make the same flag as everyone else so I used different colours and I think it’s really cool.”

Megan Cracknell, also 10 and from Sprowston, said: “I like making the flags because I am so excited for the Olympics, especially because they’re in Great Britain.”

Red, white and blue covered the classrooms while the children used templates provided by John Lewis.

Lisa Reeve, one of the visual merchandising team, said: “It’s brilliant for the children to think about experimenting and be get creative.”

Jill Hart, also a visual merchandiser, said: “The children got so involved and really went for it.

“They were so polite and enthusiastic. I didn’t meet one child who didn’t say please or thank you. Their head teacher should be very proud.”

Head teacher Ashley Best-White said: “It’s great that local John Lewis staff have volunteered to come in and hold a workshop for the children.

“They are very excited about London 2012 and it’s a nice idea to make flags to help them celebrate.”
