City College Norwich held its annual Apprenticeship Awards in The Hostry at Norwich Cathedral on Thursday night, mid-way through National Apprenticeship Week.

There are more than 1,000 apprentices studying courses through the college with employers across both Norfolk and further afield.

Eight awards were presented to apprentices in recognition of their progress in subjects including dental nursing and childcare.

From the eight, the Overall Apprentice of the Year was named as 19-year-old Chloe Walters, from Fakenham, who completed an apprenticeship in dental nursing with Beech House Dental Surgery, in Dereham.

Miss Walters said: “I’m honoured to be here and to be part of it all. It was a nice surprise to win the award. My apprenticeship was really good and assessor Melanie Newton was really supportive and my employer has been amazing.

“I had a family relative die and the day after she died I had an exam, which was obviously difficult, but Mel and Helen, my dentist, were really supportive.

“I could take time off when I wanted, there was no rush, I didn’t have to sit the exam but I chose to.”

Among other award winners was 17-year-old Michael Newbold, from Dereham, who was named Creative and Digital, Marketing and Enterprise Apprentice of the Year.

He said his confidence had grown since embarking on the course.

“It’s been really good,” he said. “I started out not knowing how to pick up the phone and speak to a customer, whereas now I can do that no problem at all, talking to customers, going out to our show site and even meeting manufacturers.

“I found the apprenticeship really good, because you get the qualification while getting a lot of work experience and dealing with customers and improving yourself with life skills.”

The other six student award-winners were Jazmin Harwood, Lauren Fulcher, Jordan Rix, Daemon Disney, Alice Hurn and Peter Luff.

The college is holding an apprenticeship open evening on Thursday, March 16 from 5.30pm to 8pm.
