A project that combines football coaching with lessons in literacy and numeracy has scored with Norfolk’s youngsters once again.

More than 50 of the county’s school children were presented with awards this week by former Canaries favourite Darren Huckerby at a ceremony at Carrow Road.

The pupils had each completed the football-themed Double Club course. Set up in 2007 following a link up between Norfolk County Council and Norwich City Football Club, it motivates young people to succeed at school by tapping into their love of sport.

Double Club aims to both improve English and maths skills in the classroom as well as football skills on the school playing field.

Among the students receiving their awards at the football club on Tuesday were those from Sprowston High School.

Jenni Dixon, NCFC Double Club tutor, said: “The students have worked incredibly hard over the last term, completed extra English and maths work on top of their usual school work and they thoroughly deserve to celebrate at the awards ceremony.”

The programme involves a tutor teaching groups of 15 students an extra hour of literacy and numeracy a week at their schools through football-themed lessons.

The students are then rewarded with an hour’s football coaching.

Double Club, which has helped more than 750 pupils so far, is currently used by primary and secondary schools as a Key Stage 2 or 3 booster course.
