A school could get a £2,000 boost if people living close to it become greener and start to recycle their rubbish correctly.

An innovative new scheme will see Catton Grove Primary School rewarded if people living within the school catchment area make sure they sort their recycling properly and use their food waste caddies.

The 'Recycling Stars' campaign has been designed to get children of people living in that part of Norwich to encourage their mums and dads to recycle more and to do it correctly.

Run by the city and county councils, people who take part in the initiative will be rewarded with star vouchers each time that a recycling bin is presented containing only clean, dry and loose recyclables.

'Bonus' stars will also be earned when people make use of their food waste caddy. After they are rewarded, the vouchers can then be converted into cash for the school

Kevin Maguire, Norwich City Council's cabinet member for waste and recycling said, 'Recycling Stars is all about working together with the local community to improve the quality and quantity of recycling we collect.

'We know that residents are really keen to do their bit to help safeguard the environment, but many are unknowingly making some common mistakes.

'We are delighted to be working in partnership with Norfolk County Council on 'Recycling Stars' and spreading the word though the school.

'The children are very excited and supportive and we hope will encourage families, friends and neighbours to get involved.'

Tracey Skillings, waste reduction officer for Norfolk County Council, addressed Catton Grove pupils at a launch assembly this week.

She said, 'The children were very enthusiastic about the recycling stars campaign.

'We hope that they will take home what they have learnt about recycling and encourage their families to get involved too.'

The first 'stars' are due to be rewarded on Tuesday next week and the campaign will run until March 20 next year.
