The Hewett Academy, on Cecil Road, has said that from September it will focus on its two-year BETC Sport and Exercise Science course instead of other A-Level subjects, of which it has offered about 20 in previous years.

Students who are mid-way through their A-Levels will be able to complete them, while those who have applied to study the courses in September will now have to find places at other sixth forms.

A spokesperson for the academy, which is run by the Inspiration Trust, said: 'Like many other sixth forms around the county we regularly review the courses we offer and how we can ensure students get the best learning and social experience possible.

'In our experience for A-Level that means having a broad range of complementary courses that give students clear opportunities to work with each other and create supportive learning communities. As students increasingly opt for larger centres, it has been difficult for us to match that experience.

'The [BTEC] makes great use of our unique sporting and teaching facilities in the centre of Norwich.'

They said they were working with applicants for September to find 'the best alternative courses', either at another Inspiration Trust school or elsewhere.

There are currently 48 pupils in the school's year 12 and another 26 in year 13, with 60 studying the sport BTEC in year 12.

A letter from principal Tom Leverage to parents on Monday said the school was in consultation with a 'small number of affected staff', who it hopes to offer roles in the academy or across the wider trust.

It said the decision would allow the school to give a 'properly rounded experience to students'.
