A law student from north Norfolk has been named the Open UniversityLaw Student of the Year 2016 at a special event in Westminster.

Cate Turner, 54, from West Beckham, near Holt, achieved a Distinction for her Master of Laws (LLM), and received the award from judge, Sir Nicholas Forwood QC, and head of the OU law school, Paul Catley.

She said: 'As someone who works full-time and is a parent of two teenage boys, the OU really helps to make study possible. It is not an easy ride, but it stimulates thinking and has given me a much greater understanding of the law in context.

'I now have my own business providing HR support to other organisations; having the LLM not only gives me credibility, but I also have the confidence to tackle legal issues I might have backed away from.'

Sir Nicholas said: 'Study of the law, and of how laws are made and applied, makes us ...also better citizens.'
