Young people who love to sing are being invited to join a new Glee-style choir starting in Norwich next month

Chart songs, hits from musicals, rock anthems and more will be among the music that will feature in the new Wharf Academy Youth Choir for 10 to 16-year-olds being set up by The Wharf Academy, in Oak Street.

Samantha Parravani-Coe, from the academy, said: “It is about having fun, singing and making new friends.

“There will be musical theatre songs, chart music, rock songs, and lots of well-known music the children will know.

“It will be a little bit like a Glee club and they do not need to read music – it is about fun and social singing at a young age, and we are also hoping to do shows, performances and competitions.”

Mrs Parravani-Coe said there were 20 spaces in the choir, but that extra choir sessions could be set up if the demand was there.

From March the choir, led by vocal tutor Kate Purling, will meet for an hour each Saturday and the choir sessions will incorporate vocal technique, basic music reading and harmony skills.

The Wharf Academy moved to St Martin at Oak, a converted church that used to be a homeless shelter, in May last year.

The building has undergone extensive refurbishment to be transformed into a centre for music for all ages.

The new choir starts on Saturday, March 2 and from then will be every Saturday from 1pm until 2pm. It will cost £5 per child per session.
