A Norfolk school is celebrating a double Olympics success – in gymnastics and singing.
Harleston Primary School’s six-strong gymnastics team became county champions when they won the gold medal at the UEA Olympic Games and are now set to compete in the regional finals.
And three talented singer-songwriters – Lauren Lugo, Elise Golby and Zoe Berger – won the best Olympic song competition in South Norfolk and were asked to perform it at the closing ceremony of the Norfolk games.
Headteacher Roger Walsh said: “It’s a great achievement – the gold medals and the song – really fantastic, especially in a year when we’re encouraging the students to embrace Olympic values. I’m very proud of them all.”
Gymnasts Max Ashken, Jacob Baugh, Matthew Renaut, Genevieve Nice, Amie Seaman and Morgan Eastick first won the South Norfolk Partnership gymnastic competition held at Attleborough Gymnastics Academy in May.
As a result, they were entered into the county finals last month at the UEA Sportspark gymnasium – an Olympic-standard arena – performing in front of British Olympic hopeful gymnast Luke Folwell.
There the team – coached by gym teacher Bev Beaumont and Georgina White – won, beating seven other school finalists and will next take part in the regional finals in Stowmarket on July 12.
Meanwhile, Lauren, Elise and Zoe won their competition with “It’s Olympic Time” – a blend of melodic singing and rap with a catchy tune.
They wrote the words and music and went to Archbishop Sancroft High School, in Harleston, with music co-ordinator Caroline Bentley where they worked with high school music teacher Will Most. He helped them to record the backing music, then they recorded themselves singing on to it.
Terrorism returned to the streets of London today as two suspected Muslim fanatics butchered a man in broad daylight in the name of “Allah”.
