A headteacher who has undergone three full inspections in four years said he was looking forward to not seeing Ofsted officials for a while after his school was rated good with some outstanding features.

The grading marks an impressive turnaround for Hellesdon High, which was issued with a notice to improve four years ago.

Having been placed in the category by inspectors in November 2008, the academy has since had two more full inspections and two monitoring visits to check its progress.

Following the visit last month, the school was rated good in all four inspection areas – with the achievements of girls at the school, some teaching, and the headteacher’s leadership considered outstanding.

In their report, inspectors said: “Good teaching is making sure that the achievement of all groups of students in English, mathematics and science is at least good and rapidly improving.

“Students are proud representatives of their school. They behave well, feel safe and contribute to the running of the school and the local community.”

The school will now have a break of at least three years until its next inspection.

Headteacher Gerry Batty said: “I’ve been here four years and I’ve had three inspections. I really don’t want any more.”

He said the culture of the school had changed completely during those years. “I think what really stands out for me is how the quality of teaching has got better and students’ attitudes to learning. They now think it’s really good to be clever.”
