A group of hard-working sports enthusiasts are celebrating after scooping their place in the county’s regional finals.
Fakenham Academy’s badminton teams all achieved success at the recent Norfolk County School Championships.
Held at Dereham Sports Centre, the Under 14s Boys and Girls went up against Springwood, St Clements, and Neatherd High School. Both teams finished runner-up in their groups.
Teacher Jackie Price said: “As both teams have only played badminton for two years this is a great achievement.”
The Under 16 Boys went up against Aylsham and St Clements and were crowned champions.
This means they were able to book their place in the regional finals, which take place in March.
“The team of the tournament however were the Under 16 Girls,” said Mrs Price.
“Having to play teams from Aylsham, Hammond, Springwood, and the favourites for the title Thorpe St Andrew, was not going to be an easy task.
“This was to be a team effort with each player having to play their part to help win their matches.
“With their confidence high they [ensured] their title of Norfolk county school’s champions.”
Mrs Price, who started a lunchtime badminton club nearly a decade ago, said these results were due to the hard work and dedication from all the players since they started in Year 7. She joked that promises of a meal after matches may have kept them going.
“Wanting to practice regularly, having fun whilst playing, and making friendships has made them the players they are today,” she said.
“My Under 16s have played badminton for just over four years, and now in Year 11 it is great to see them achieve the success they deserved.”
Presently Mrs Price has more than 50 pupils playing badminton each week at the after-school club held at Fakenham Academy.
The teams have also won many other titles, including the Norfolk schools league championship.
Speaking previously about her players, she said: “I would like to thank my pupils for the effort and commitment they have put in over the years and hope they continue with their success and thanks to parents and the school for allowing them the time to attend the games and competitions.”
