Education watchdog rates school as outstanding across the board

A primary school is celebrating after receiving a glowing report from an education watchdog.

Corton Church of England Primary School was awarded ‘outstanding’ across all areas after an being assessed by the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

The result signals an improvement on the previous SIAS rating, which gave the school a ‘good’ rating in January 2013.

In her report, the inspector highlighted Corton Primary’s determination to deal with inadequacies, stating “all actions from the previous SIAS have been very thoroughly addressed and their impact monitored, evaluated and embedded.”

There was praise for pupils, who “behave very well, show respect for all and feel they are listened to.”

Religious education, evidently a central subject in the Church of England school, was also commended. It was found that “all groups of pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities make at least good progress in RE.”

The report added: “Teaching and learning in all year groups in RE is often outstanding and always at least good.”

Jemma Dalley, subject leader for religious education, said: “We are absolutely thrilled; it is a huge achievement to be recognised in this way. This report reflects everything we are about and we are all so proud of the outcome.

“There is something very special about Corton Primary and I am delighted to see this has been acknowledged. As a team of pupils, staff, parents and governors, we are so very proud of our school.”

Despite the widespread plaudits, the SIAMS inspector did note areas in which the school could improve, such as a need to “develop a deeper understanding amongst pupils of diversity and difference through developing trips out to other places of worship.”

Improvements to the school’s planning of collective worship were also suggested, including making a more conscious effort to invite parents to Eucharist events.

However, Corton’s distinctiveness and effectiveness were unequivocally saluted. “All members of the school community recognise the strong sense of Christian purpose at Corton and feel part of a very warm, welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment where all are valued and given the opportunity to shine.”
