City of Norwich School students fundraise for Big C charity
Students created their own version of TV’s The Voice to end a week-long series of fundraising events.
The City of Norwich School in Eaton Road, Norwich, holds an annual fundraising week for a chosen charity and this year it was the Big C.
Fundraising took place all last week and on Friday students performed for a panel of judges. Towards the end of the session, special guest Sprowston singer Bill Downs, a finalist on The Voice, performed.
Deputy house leader Phil O’Brien said: “It’s always such a lovely atmosphere to end the week. The student council chooses which charity to support each year and we are hoping that more than £4,000 was raised.”
Deputy headteacher Jo Philpott said: “The level of participation among staff and students makes this a whole school event, from Year 7 to 13.”
Mr Downs said: “It was good. I enjoy doing schools. I sang a few songs including Plan B’s ‘She Said’ and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”
His latest EP, Best Intentions, made it to number nine in the iTunes singer/songwriter charts.
Mr Downs was contacted by head boy Lewis Townsend, 15, from North Earlham. who said: “The event was based on The Voice so we asked Bill if he could come to the school and perform. Eight acts took part after 40 were auditioned. Each was given three minutes. Four judges pretended to be from The Voice with art teacher Polly Turner as Tom Jones. There was a great atmosphere and the standard was excellent.”
Other events throughout the week included a teacher auction, a university challenge quiz, and a game between year 12 and year 13 at rugby, which the younger team won. There was also a dodgeball tournament involving the staff and sixth formers, and an ‘I’m a teacher, get me out of here’ event with teachers playing Russian roulette with eggs and eating baby food. There was also a sixth form version of the TV dating show, Take me out. Three sixth form boys also shaved their heads, which raised about £800 alone.
