North Walsham High School could be given full control of the sports centre which forms part of its Spenser Avenue site.
North Norfolk District Councillors (NNDC) will tomorrow discuss a plan to hand over responsibility for running the community side of North Walsham Sports Centre to the school, which already uses it for pupils’ PE lessons and other activities.
The scheme will be discussed in private at the end of tomorrow’s NNDC’s cabinet meeting. A brief public report on the proposal says that the move would “give rise to long-term financial savings to the council.”
At present the sports centre is run under a Joint User Agreement between the county council, through the high school’s governors, and NNDC.
The report also says that the move would be part of the school’s “wider community aspirations,” especially given the recent completion of the adjoining Atrium building; the £5.3m centre for education, arts, business and other school and community activities.
In a three-part recommendation councillors are asked to confirm the transfer, enter into formal negotiations and agree that any lump-sum payment as part of the deal is conditional on the school keeping the centre open for two years.
Cabinet member John Lee declined to discuss the proposal before the meeting.
