For many, the very thought of algebra is enough to send chills down the spine.

However, for more than a dozen Beccles schoolchildren, getting their heads around it is far from pi in the sky.

Fourteen pupils from Albert Pye Primary took part in a special able maths day at Carlton Colville Primary, where the daunting subject was among their tasks.

As well as tackling tough equations, children took part in a number of challenges, putting their minds to the test.

Year 5 pupil Olive said: “I enjoyed the trip because we learned about methods and what different signs mean.”

Emily, also in Year 5, said: “This day really challenged me and I loved it.

“I especially enjoyed the mathematical clocks and tablecloths.”

Marcus, a Year 6 pupil, added: “I had a great day. I learned about factorials and would go again any day.”

Year 6 pupil Julie Harman thanked Carlton Colville for hosting the event.
