The scheme, run by the EU-funded Answer programme, will see pupils take part in a range of visits and workshops aimed at giving them the skills to become leaders of energy reduction at their schools.

Among the 36 young people and 12 teachers taking part are teenagers from Dereham Sixth Form, Hamonds High, in Swaffham, Notre Dame High, in Norwich, and Attleborough High.

Students from Norway, Sweden and Suffolk will also be involved.

The programme will begin at Holt Hall on Tuesday where they will set a target for carbon reduction and learn how to campaign on climate issues.

The next day they will visit the Wells operational base of Scira Offshore Energy, which is developing the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Windfarm. The students will learn how technology and engineering is helping to tackle climate change before heading off to the Holkham estate. On Thursday they will return to Holt Hall where they will work on presentations with Tim O’Riordan, professor of environment sciences at the University of East Anglia.

Alison Thomas, county council cabinet member for children’s services, said Norfolk’s young people were among the most passionate when it came to climate change.

  • “The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself." .....Club of Rome 1992
