Our appeal to help victims of the devastating storm surge has seen an overwhelming response with donations passing the £20,000 mark in the first day.
Britain has opened its heart and helping hands to the flood-stricken communities of Norfolk and north Suffolk.
In a day of intense activity along our coastline, hope and repair work in devastated areas was matched by hard cash by people from near and far. As our councils opened their bank accounts to ensure emergency infrastructure work could proceed, the government promised cash aid, although some believed the criteria might be too strict.
Meanwhile, The EDP’s Flood Appeal fund for Norfolk and Lowestoft swelled to the £20,000 mark and an emergency funds committee had its first meeting to decide on critical need. Donations of cash came in thick and fast, with 27 cheques received by appeal response partner The Norfolk Community Foundation and 10 more at the EDP’s Cromer office.
Graham Tuttle, chief executive of Norfolk Community Foundation, announced a major boost with a donation of £10,000 from the trustees of the Paul Bassham Charitable Trust. “This shows how all types of people and organisations are behind the appeal and willing to contribute to helping those most at need,” he said.
Another donation was a £100 cheque from Malcolm Kerby, chairman of the Happisburgh-based Coast Concern Action Group.
“The people of Happisburgh are the most qualified to understand the trauma and difficulty in all of this,” he said.
“We know what it means and we’d just like to show our solidarity with everybody in some small way. We’re thinking of them all.”
East Coast Group employs 150 people in and around North Walsham, where it has made nursery and baby goods since 1952. Making a £500 donation, its executive chairman Eric White said: “We have a duty to pay something back to the community.
“It tugged at the heart strings to see so many people losing their houses.”
Holt Town Council has agreed to donate £200 to the appeal.
