As Welney Washes freeze, the birds at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve turn skaters

Even the most graceful of creatures can find things a bit slippy underfoot when temperatures drop to ten below.

With widespread ice and frost, the Washes at Welney have become a giant rink for all the resident and visiting wildfowl at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust Reserve.

The Whooper swans are having to be extra careful as they come into land and these two made a difficult manoeuvre look surprisingly easy. But then they do fly in from Iceland where low temperatures are hardly rare.

The bird pictured on the left is K6J and was ringed at Welney in 2008 while his mate is not ringed.

Both birds have been attending the noon feeds at the reserve.
